Orthodontic treatment for children

Orthodontic treatment isn’t just beneficial for teenagers and adults, it’s important for children too. The earlier your child sees an orthodontist, the earlier any potential orthodontic problems can be identified.

The British Orthodontic Society recommends children have their first orthodontic consultation between the ages of seven and 11 while their teeth and jaws are still developing.

Treatment under the NHS

Orthodontic treatment is available via the NHS for children under the age of 18. However, they must meet criteria as set out in the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Needs (IOTN). This Index is designed for children who have serious orthodontic problems that have the potential to affect their overall health and well-being.

At The Brace, we treat children on the NHS, but there are some limitations to this service:

  • Orthodontic treatment for kids
  • Orthodontic treatment for kids
  • Orthodontic treatment for kids

  • We are only given funding to treat a fixed number of children each year so there may be a waiting list
  • We may not be able to provide treatment if you do not reside in the Primary Care Trust area
  • For those children we do treat, we can only fit traditional metal braces. More discreet options, such as Invisalign Teen, aren’t available under the NHS.
  • We only have select appointments for children being treated under the NHS and these are usually in work and school hours.

We provide an excellent standard of care for those who are referred to us for NHS orthodontic treatment and have been recognised for:

  • how well we take x-rays
  • the standard of the models made of your teeth before and after treatment from the impressions taken by our orthodontists
  • our accuracy of IOTN scoring and patient treatment needs
  • the quality of our diagnosis and treatment plans proposed by our specialist orthodontists
  • how well we carry out treatment for our patients.

If you, or your child, would like to be treated under the NHS please ask your dentist to refer you to us.

Private treatment

If your child does not qualify for orthodontic treatment under the NHS we can still treat them as a private patient, which brings added benefits:

  • We aren’t restricted to only using certain types of braces to correct your child’s orthodontic problems
  • Your child can be treated right away. There are no waiting lists for private treatment.
  • Appointments can be made in the evenings and after work or school

If you are under 18 but do not qualify for treatment under the NHS, we can offer metal braces for a reduced fee of £2200. This includes all appointments, x-rays and removable plastic retainers. Additional fees apply if treatment is complicated.

To make private orthodontic treatment affordable, we offer 0% interest-free payment plans to help spread the cost.
