Before and After Braces

Jamil’s treatment has been carried out with metal fixed braces on the upper and lower teeth.  When he first came to us, his teeth were very crowded which had caused some to be pushed back and others forward.  On the top his second teeth were set very far back, on the bottom the canine teeth were pushed forward.  Our upper teeth should bite slightly over and outside of our lower teeth, many of the teeth were in an incorrect bite which can lead to wear of the teeth over time.

To make some space to move all the teeth into line, 4 teeth were extracted. This is very common when the teeth are severely crowded and the extractions are carried out by a general dentist.  We then placed upper and lower fixed metal braces and Jamil came to see us every 8 weeks to have the braces adjusted and progress the treatment.  Once the treatment was completed and the braces were removed, we gave Jamil retainers to help keep his teeth in place.  Retainers are a very important part of the treatment to ensure that the teeth remain straight.

As Jamil was under 18 when his treatment started, and his teeth were in a bad bite potentially causing damage, his treatment was carried out on the NHS.  However, it would also be possible to carry out this treatment privately for an adult, using more discreet or even invisible fixed braces like ceramic or lingual braces.  To find out more about these types of braces, please visit our Adult Orthodontics page.
