Smile of the Week
Paula recently completed her orthodontic treatment at The Brace which was carried out with fixed ceramic braces and took around 2 years.
Her main concerns when she first came to see us where that her teeth were not straight, also that her smile was narrow and in an incorrect bite which was causing wear to some teeth. The incorrect bite can be seen in the photo from the start of treatment where some of the lower teeth bite in front of the upper teeth instead of behind.

Functional Appliances – correcting a small lower jaw with a Twin Block
Fahima had orthodontic treatment with us as an NHS patient. When she first came to see us she was unhappy with the appearance of her profile due to her lower teeth and jaw being set back compared to the upper, this also made it look like her top teeth were sticking out. As Fahima was young and still growing we were able to use a functional appliance. This is a type of brace which works with the natural growth of the patient and guides the teeth and jaws into a more favourable position.

Why do Orthodontists Extract Teeth?
It is sometimes necessary to take some teeth out in order to have orthodontic treatment with braces. The reason that Orthodontists extract teeth is to create space so that overcrowded teeth can be moved into line. To keep things symmetrical, teeth are often removed from both sides of the mouth in the top and bottom. If it is necessary to remove teeth then orthodontic treatment must be carried out with a fixed type of brace, this can be either traditional metal braces, tooth-coloured ceramic, Read more [...]

Retainers, what are they and why do you need them?
First let’s start with the difference between braces and retainers:
Braces are any kind of appliance used to move your teeth into a straighter or more aesthetic position. These can be traditional fixed metal braces, discreet tooth coloured braces or virtually invisible clear aligners like Invisalign®.
Retainers are used to hold the teeth in their new position and keep them straight, these can be either fixed or removable.
Once the ‘active’ phase of your orthodontic treatment is completed Read more [...]

Pros and Cons – a comparison of different types of braces
Metal fixed braces, or ‘train tracks’ are the most widely used style of braces and often associated with teenagers. They are suitable in all cases to straighten the teeth and are the most cost effective.
It is a common misconception that other types of braces are not as effective or efficient as traditional metal fixed braces. In many cases the type of brace you choose to straighten your teeth depends on personal factors like how concerned you are with the way they look, if you prefer Read more [...]

Can I have Braces if I have Crowns or Bridges?
